ISO Approves China-Led Proposal for AI Applications in Smart Cities Standard
An international standard proposal titled "Sustainable cities and communities — Artificial Intelligence applications in smart city operating models — Part 2: Principles and elements," led by China, has been officially approved for development by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Experts from 16 nations, including China, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Singapore, will collaboratively draft the document. As artificial intelligence is increasingly integrated into urban administration, this standard addresses the common dilemma of cities adopting advanced technology without clear governance rules. Establishing international guidelines promotes inclusive, transparent, and responsible AI practices across global smart city initiatives. The proposed standard outlines systemic framework elements across three main dimensions: strategic management (risk oversight and performance monitoring), public services (blending personalized and universal services), and resource management (data governance and resource collaboration).
## BACKGROUND
Smart city operating models rely on data integration and algorithms to optimize urban governance and public services. ISO technical committees such as ISO/TC 268 focus on creating standardized frameworks for sustainable cities and communities to help urban areas balance innovation, resilience, and UN Sustainable Development Goals.
