Intel Reports Severe CPU Supply Shortage, Meeting Only 50% of Demand
Intel leadership revealed that soaring CPU demand driven by AI inference workloads currently outstrips capacity, leaving the company able to fulfill only about 50% of customer orders. At the same time, Intel urged the tech industry to diversify AI chip foundry manufacturing to mitigate supply chain risks tied to TSMC's market dominance. While GPUs handle AI model training, CPUs remain essential for running AI inference applications and orchestrating massive GPU clusters. Intel's supply constraints highlight growing hardware bottlenecks in the AI boom, while its foundry push aims to offer an alternative to TSMC's near-monopoly in advanced chip manufacturing and packaging. Intel is positioning its EMIB (Embedded Multi-die Interconnect Bridge) packaging technology to compete directly with TSMC's CoWoS, though packaging substrate shortages present an ongoing challenge. To address process yield issues and strengthen foundry operations, Intel has been securing adoption for its 14A process node while expanding key leadership in backend technology.
