Instagram has updated its "AI Creator" label to "AI-generated profile" to help users distinguish between real human creators and AI-generated virtual personas. Accounts that fail to disclose their virtual nature will face algorithmic restrictions, preventing their content from being recommended in Reels and Explore. This policy targets the growing trend of highly realistic virtual influencers that mimic real humans, aiming to reduce misinformation and improve transparency on social media. It marks a significant step in platform-level moderation of AI-generated content and digital personas. The restriction only applies to highly realistic AI accounts that do not self-disclose, while human creators using AI tools for photo editing or caption writing remain unaffected. Instagram will use automated algorithms to flag these accounts, but users can appeal if they believe a mistake has been made.
