Insomniac Denies Generative AI Use After Bathroom Sign Texture Bug in Marvel's Wolverine

Insomniac Games denied accusations of using generative AI in Marvel's Wolverine after players reported an unusual, overlapping figure on a male bathroom sign texture. Community Director James Stevenson clarified that the visual glitch was caused by a UV mapping error that will be fixed in an upcoming patch. The controversy highlights the heightened scrutiny and skepticism surrounding generative AI in game development. It demonstrates how minor graphical bugs can quickly spark public backlash and allegations of AI usage in modern high-profile video games. While some players doubted that a simple flat texture could duplicate figures solely from a UV error, others demonstrated how texture coordinate misalignments can stretch and repeat patterns. Insomniac firmly stated that no AI-generated assets were included in the game.

## BACKGROUND

UV mapping is a 3D modeling technique that flattens a 3D object's surface into a 2D coordinate space, allowing 2D texture images to be wrapped accurately around 3D models. The letters U and V denote the axes of the 2D texture space. If UV coordinates overlap or misalign during asset creation, rendered textures can stretch, mirror, or appear duplicated on the 3D surface.
