Hyundai Delays In-House Autonomous Driving System to 2029, Partners with NVIDIA
Hyundai Motor Group has postponed the launch of its self-developed autonomous driving software platform, Atria, by two years to late 2029. In the interim, the automaker will partner with NVIDIA to launch vehicles equipped with Level 2+ and Level 2++ driving assistance systems starting in 2028. This strategic pivot highlights the immense software and technical hurdles traditional automakers face when building proprietary autonomous driving stacks from scratch. By adopting NVIDIA's ecosystem in the short term, Hyundai can stay competitive while leveraging fleet data to train its internal AI models. Vehicles built on NVIDIA's Hyperion 10 platform will initially omit expensive LiDAR sensors, opting for a suite of cameras, ultrasonic sensors, and millimeter-wave radars. Hyundai executive Park Min-woo emphasized that system data returned from NVIDIA-powered cars will be used to train Atria, though a timeline for commercial Level 3 deployment remains unannounced.

Autonomous driving systems are categorized from Level 1 to Level 5, with Level 2+ and 2++ offering advanced driver assistance like automated lane changes and highway navigation while still requiring human driver oversight.
