Huawei Unveils World's First Vertical '3D Data Center' Architecture for AI Workloads

Huawei officially introduced the world's first '3D Data Center' architecture at the 2026 AIDC Industry Development Conference in Wuhu, Anhui. The new physical design replaces traditional horizontal data center layouts by vertically stacking four layers: cooling, IT equipment, power supply, and backup power. As modern AI training clusters push server rack power consumption from typical kilowatts up to 100–200 kW or more, traditional facilities face severe thermal and space constraints. Huawei's 3D architecture addresses these bottlenecks by dramatically shortening power and cooling cable/pipe routing while cutting electromechanical delivery timelines in half through prefabricated modularization. Inspired by semiconductor manufacturing plants, the design strictly separates utility infrastructure layers from the compute production layer to enable zone isolation and prevent fault propagation. Huawei Cloud is already building 3D data centers at scale across key hubs in Guizhou, Inner Mongolia, and Anhui, and has published a comprehensive 3D Data Center monograph and schematic diagram library for the industry.

## BACKGROUND

Traditional data centers deploy power systems, cooling equipment, and server racks horizontally across wide single-floor or multi-story structures, requiring lengthy horizontal routing lines. The rapid rise of generative AI has created massive demand for high-density compute infrastructure, overwhelming legacy power delivery and cooling capacities.
