Huawei Unveils Mate 90 Series Powered by Kirin 9050 Chip
Huawei announced its Mate 90 smartphone series featuring the Kirin 9050 Pro chip, which utilizes a new 'logic folding' technology to deliver major performance leaps. The processor integrates upgraded CPU, GPU, and NPU architectures designed to support advanced on-device artificial intelligence tasks. This release highlights Huawei's continuous push in domestic semiconductor design and mobile AI hardware capabilities despite ongoing industry constraints. The integration of advanced on-device model deployment features signals a growing industry trend towards local, efficient AI processing on mobile devices. The Kirin 9050 Pro features a doubled compute unit and cache in its Mali GPU, alongside a DaVinci architecture NPU capable of deploying 30-billion parameter Mixture of Experts (MoE) models on-device. Overall device performance saw generational increases, with the Mate 90 Pro Max achieving a 31% performance boost over its predecessor.
## BACKGROUND
Logic folding is a semiconductor design and 3D integration innovation introduced by Huawei under its tau (τ) law framework to optimize circuit layouts. Mixture of Experts (MoE) is a neural network architecture that activates only a sparse subset of parameters for any given input, allowing large language models to run efficiently with reduced computational costs.
