Huawei Predicts 100,000-Fold Growth in Global Annual Token Consumption by 2035

Huawei released its "Intelligent World 2035" research report, proposing ten key propositions for the future of AI and predicting a 100,000-fold surge in annual global token consumption by 2035. The report attributes this massive growth primarily to autonomous AI agents, which are projected to generate over 90% of total token traffic. This projection highlights a fundamental shift from application-centric software to agent-centric AI ecosystems. To sustain such computational demands, the tech industry will need to scale compute clusters, redesign semiconductor approaches, and re-engineer data center power and cooling systems. The report outlines core technological focus areas, such as scaling compute clusters 100-fold while reducing agent execution costs 1,000-fold, introducing "Tau's Law" chip design to substitute geometric scaling with time scaling, and establishing an Agent OS. Additionally, Huawei co-released the GDII 2026 index predicting AI will generate over $27 trillion in cumulative economic value over the next five years.
