Huawei Pharmaceutical Legion President Clarifies Huawei Will Not Develop Drugs
Fan Jie, President of Huawei's Pharmaceutical Legion, clarified at the 11th Pharmaceutical Innovation and Investment Conference that Huawei will not develop drugs or pipelines. Instead, the company aims to serve as the technological foundation and ecosystem supporter for AI-driven drug discovery by providing computing power, storage, network, toolchains, and data governance. This strategic stance positions Huawei as a foundational 'water seller' in the biotech sector rather than a competitor to pharmaceutical companies, reassuring biotech firms that rely on its infrastructure. By offering massive computing clusters and collaborating with AI drug discovery partners, Huawei aims to accelerate how AI models integrate into real-world drug research pipelines. Huawei has already partnered with companies like DeepSeek-affiliated or other AI biotech firms, deploying hundred-card computing clusters worth nearly 100 million RMB and empowering research institutions like the Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica. Furthermore, Huawei boasts a unique 1024-card supernode architecture designed to handle large-scale AI model training and data workloads in drug development.
## BACKGROUND
Huawei's 'Legions' (军团) are dedicated business units created to focus on specific industries and accelerate commercialization by borrowing models from Google. In the context of AI drug discovery, high-performance computing clusters and advanced storage are vital for running molecular simulations and protein structure predictions efficiently.
