Huawei Claims Ascend AI Market Share Surpasses NVIDIA in China
Huawei Rotating Chairman Eric Xu stated that the company's Ascend AI hardware has overtaken NVIDIA in Chinese market share. He also revealed that domestic demand for the newly launched Ascend 950 supernode exceeds Huawei's current production capacity, ruling out immediate plans for global expansion. This milestone highlights China's accelerating semiconductor self-reliance in response to US trade and export restrictions. Huawei's growing domestic dominance signals a major shift in the global AI hardware landscape as Chinese tech enterprises pivot heavily toward native hardware architectures. The Ascend 950 supernode leverages Huawei's Peerium computing architecture, which replaces traditional master-slave setups to interlink CPUs, NPUs, memory, and storage seamlessly. While Xu acknowledged that Chinese chip technology still trails top international standards, he stressed that maintaining a stable, self-sufficient supply chain is the essential path forward.
## BACKGROUND
US export controls have limited Chinese access to NVIDIA's most advanced AI processors, prompting domestic technology firms to accelerate indigenous chip development. Huawei created the Ascend series of AI processors to support large language model training and deployment. Peerium is Huawei's flagship AI computing architecture designed to connect thousands of processors into a single, unified computing system.
