Google's SynthID Watermark is Resilient but Fails to Solve AI Misinformation

An evaluation of Google's SynthID technology shows that while the digital watermark is highly resistant to tampering and editing, it is not a complete solution for combating AI-generated misinformation. As generative AI tools become more widespread, identifying AI-generated content is crucial for digital trust, but technical watermarks alone cannot address the social and political challenges of misinformation. SynthID embeds invisible digital watermarks directly into AI-generated media like text, images, audio, and video using neural networks. While the watermark remains detectable even after modifications like cropping or compression, it relies on platforms and users actively checking for it.

## BACKGROUND

Generative AI watermarking is an emerging technology designed to trace the origin and verify the authenticity of AI-generated content. Google's SynthID uses two neural networks—one to embed the watermark and another to detect it—without degrading the quality of the original media.
