Google Releases Standalone Gemini App for Windows 10 and 11
Google has officially launched a standalone Gemini desktop client for Windows 10 and 11, allowing users to summon the AI assistant from any screen using an "Alt + Space" shortcut. The application features a web-like UI with support for image and video generation as well as connected app extensions. Bringing Gemini directly to the desktop via a global keyboard shortcut positions Google to compete more aggressively with Microsoft Copilot for OS-level AI presence. It gives Windows users frictionless, instant access to AI assistance without opening a web browser. The app features a dedicated settings menu for managing microphone, camera, and location permissions, as well as toggling automated launch at Windows startup. Unlike the desktop Google Search app released in April, this app functions as a full-featured conversational Gemini client.
## BACKGROUND
Google Gemini is Google's primary multimodal AI assistant, capable of processing and generating text, image, and code content across various devices. While Gemini was previously accessible on PC mainly via web browsers, standalone desktop applications allow AI tools to integrate more deeply into daily desktop workflows.
