Google Pulls Google Earth AI Feature After Users Generate Fake Satellite Images
Google has disabled a new AI image editing feature in Google Earth less than 24 hours after its launch due to users abusing it to generate highly realistic fake satellite images of sensitive locations. The feature utilized the Gemini Nano Banana 2 image model to modify geographic imagery based on text prompts. This incident underscores the significant risks of synthetic satellite imagery, which can be easily weaponized for geopolitical misinformation, and highlights the ongoing challenges tech companies face in implementing effective AI safety guardrails. Although the generated images contained watermarks and were not published to the public Google Earth database, researchers successfully generated fake depictions of refugee camps and nuclear facilities. Google stated the feature was suspended while they implement stricter safety measures.
