Google Plans $15 Billion Investment to Expand Malaysia Data Centers
Google has announced a plan to invest $15 billion in Malaysia between 2027 and 2028 to expand its local data centers and cloud computing infrastructure. The initiative includes building new computing centers alongside investments in local water security, power supply, and skills training. This massive investment highlights the ongoing surge in AI-driven digital infrastructure demand and reinforces Southeast Asia's position as a major technology hub. It also demonstrates how tech giants are actively scaling up regional operations to handle data-intensive AI workloads. The expansion project is projected to contribute $1.1 billion to Malaysia's economy and create tens of thousands of local jobs during both construction and operation phases. Additionally, Google recently committed $1.6 million to shared water infrastructure in Negeri Sembilan to secure resources for its data centers.
## BACKGROUND
Malaysia has rapidly emerged as a leading data center hub in Southeast Asia due to its competitive operating costs, reliable infrastructure, and strategic proximity to hubs like Singapore. Global tech giants including Oracle, Amazon, Alibaba, and ByteDance have increasingly established operations there to support growing digital services.
