Google Pays Households and Businesses to Reduce Power Use for AI
Google has partnered with energy firm Voltus to create a massive virtual power plant in the PJM grid, paying households and businesses to reduce electricity consumption and free up to 1070MW of capacity for AI data centers. This initiative highlights an innovative approach by tech giants to tackle severe energy constraints and grid capacity bottlenecks caused by the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure without waiting for new power plants to be built. The virtual power plant aggregates thousands of residential and commercial participants who use automated devices like smart thermostats or energy storage batteries to lower demand during peak hours, representing one of the largest projects of its kind for a tech company.
## BACKGROUND
A virtual power plant aggregates distributed energy resources like household smart thermostats and batteries using software to function as a unified power source. The PJM grid is a major regional transmission organization operating in the eastern United States, managing high electricity loads and supporting wholesale power markets.
