Google Negotiates $1.5B+ Deal to License Mechanize Tech and Hire Talent
Google is reportedly negotiating a deal worth over $1.5 billion with San Francisco-based AI startup Mechanize. The proposed agreement involves hiring key talent from the startup for model evaluation and securing a non-exclusive license for its technology. This deal highlights the intense competition in AI-assisted programming, where Google faces pressure from rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic. Additionally, it reflects a growing trend of tech giants using licensing and talent-acquisition structures to bypass antitrust scrutiny. Mechanize, which builds reinforcement learning (RL) environments for AI labs, was valued at $500 million after a $9.1 million funding round. ## BACKGROUND

Google previously used this strategy with Character.AI and Windsurf, whose CEO now leads Google's Antigravity coding platform.
