Google is shutting down its Jules AI coding assistant

Google is gradually shutting down its AI coding assistant Jules, which was launched in December 2024 to handle asynchronous programming tasks. The company is folding the core insights and experiences gained from Jules into its newer development platform, Antigravity. This shutdown reflects Google's strategic shift toward unifying its artificial intelligence developer ecosystem into more comprehensive tools. Developers who relied on Jules will need to transition to alternative environments like Antigravity for agent-driven software development. Jules was originally designed as an experimental autonomous coding agent capable of fixing bugs, writing tests, and releasing features. Google DeepMind subsequently launched Antigravity in November 2025 as a standalone, agent-first IDE based on VS Code.

## BACKGROUND

Google Antigravity is a next-generation integrated development environment introduced by Google DeepMind as a VS Code fork. It is designed around an agent-first philosophy to allow AI to autonomously plan, execute, verify, and iterate on complex software engineering tasks.
