Google DeepMind Reorganizes: Demis Hassabis Appointed Alphabet Chief Scientist to Focus on AGI

Google DeepMind co-founder Demis Hassabis is stepping down from daily management to become Chairman of DeepMind and Chief Scientist of Alphabet, focusing on AGI strategy and scientific breakthroughs. Koray Kavukcuoglu will take over daily operations as Senior Vice President, while long-time Google Chief Scientist Jeff Dean is leaving to co-found a new venture called Discovery Loop. This leadership transition allows Hassabis to dedicate his expertise to long-term AGI strategy and scientific applications, such as AI-driven drug discovery. Meanwhile, streamlining DeepMind's daily operations under Kavukcuoglu aims to accelerate the development of the Gemini model roadmap in a highly competitive AI market. Kavukcuoglu will report directly to Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai and oversee the development of upcoming models, including the unreleased Gemini 4. Hassabis will also continue to lead Isomorphic Labs, while Alphabet will serve as a founding investor and cloud provider for Jeff Dean's new nonprofit, Discovery Loop.
