Google Begins Phasing Out Google Assistant on Mobile in Favor of Gemini

Google has officially begun retiring Google Assistant on mobile devices, transitioning voice and virtual assistant functionality across the Android ecosystem to its generative AI assistant, Gemini. The migration is rolling out in batches over several weeks, after which eligible Android devices will automatically switch and users will no longer be able to revert to Google Assistant. This migration represents a fundamental shift in mobile ecosystems from traditional command-based voice software to conversational, LLM-powered AI assistants. It integrates advanced reasoning, multimodal context understanding, and content generation directly into everyday mobile devices and connected accessories. The transition automatically extends to paired accessories like Wear OS smartwatches, supported headphones, and projected Android Auto, though cars with built-in Google systems will temporarily retain Assistant. Devices that do not meet Gemini's minimum requirements (Android 9 or higher with at least 2GB of RAM) or are located in unsupported regions will temporarily keep Google Assistant until the full phase-out concludes.
