GenOffice: Open-Source AI Office Suite and CLI for Agentic Document Editing
GenOffice, an open-source AI office suite and CLI tool, gained over 4,200 GitHub stars this month. It enables AI coding assistants like Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, and Cursor to programmatically create and edit native Microsoft Office (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx), PDF, Markdown, and HTML files locally. This project bridges developer-focused AI tools with standard office productivity formats, allowing AI agents to generate rich business documents directly on a user's machine. By operating locally across macOS, Windows, and Linux with a bring-your-own-key approach, it offers privacy-conscious users document automation without relying on third-party cloud office APIs. Built using TypeScript, GenOffice features built-in editors for Docs, Sheets, Slides, PDF, Markdown, and HTML, alongside a dedicated `genoffice` CLI. It integrates into AI workflows using standard agent skill interfaces, allowing agents in terminal or IDE environments to execute complex document creation tasks.
## BACKGROUND
Modern AI developer tools like Claude Code and Cursor operate as autonomous agents capable of reading codebases, running CLI commands, and extending their abilities through modular skills. Traditionally, programmatically generating and modifying native Microsoft Office files required heavy enterprise software or specialized cloud APIs. GenOffice simplifies this process by providing a lightweight local tool and agent skill that AI assistants can directly invoke to produce real Office files.
