Game Science to Avoid Generative AI in Black Myth: Zhong Kui Asset Creation
Yang Qi, the Art Director of Game Science, announced that the studio will avoid using generative AI (AIGC) during the design and asset creation phases for their upcoming game, Black Myth: Zhong Kui. He drew inspiration from filmmaker Christopher Nolan's use of traditional IMAX 70mm film to emphasize the value of traditional craftsmanship over rushing to adopt new technologies. This decision highlights a growing debate in the gaming industry regarding the preservation of human craftsmanship versus the efficiency of AI-generated content. By prioritizing traditional design methods, Game Science aims to maintain and exceed the high-quality, photorealistic art style established in Black Myth: Wukong. Yang Qi clarified that the studio is not hostile toward AI, but prefers not to rush into adopting it, believing there is plenty of time to integrate such tools in the future. The studio's goal for Black Myth: Zhong Kui is to push photorealistic visual fidelity to an even higher level than its predecessor.
## BACKGROUND
Game Science is the Chinese developer behind the critically acclaimed action RPG Black Myth: Wukong, which gained massive popularity for its high-fidelity graphics and cultural storytelling. Generative AI (AIGC) has recently become a major point of discussion in game development, offering ways to automate asset creation but raising concerns over artistic originality and job displacement.
