Four-Person Team Uses AI to Develop ArtCraft, an Open-Source Adobe Alternative Suite

A four-person team has leveraged AI code generation to create ArtCraft, a free and open-source software suite designed as an offline alternative to Adobe Creative Cloud. The suite features applications such as PhotoCraft (a Photoshop alternative) and LightCraft (a Lightroom alternative), requiring no subscriptions, account registrations, or telemetry data collection. This project highlights how AI-assisted software engineering allows small teams to rapidly build complex desktop applications that previously required massive engineering budgets. It also offers creative professionals a viable, privacy-conscious path away from Adobe's costly subscription ecosystem. ArtCraft's apps are written natively in Rust, reverse-engineering core Adobe features while eliminating mandatory cloud connectivity and user tracking. However, all applications in the suite are still under active development, with some currently in early alpha testing.

## BACKGROUND

Adobe Creative Cloud has long held a near-monopoly on professional creative tools like Photoshop and Lightroom. Over the years, Adobe's shift from perpetual software licenses to a strict subscription model with cloud dependency has sparked ongoing frustration among digital artists, photographers, and designers.
