Caitlin Kalinowski, the former head of robotics hardware at OpenAI and a veteran hardware executive from Meta and Apple, has joined Anthropic as a technical staff member to conduct research. Kalinowski's transition signals Anthropic's potential expansion into physical AI and robotics, intensifying the talent war with OpenAI, which is also actively rebuilding its robotics division. Before joining Anthropic, Kalinowski led Meta's AR/VR hardware teams and Apple's Mac Pro and MacBook Air projects, bringing deep hardware integration expertise to Anthropic's research team.
## BACKGROUND
Embodied AI refers to integrating artificial intelligence into physical systems like robots to interact with the physical world. While OpenAI initially disbanded its early robotics team after solving a Rubik's Cube with a robotic hand, it has recently renewed its efforts to hire hardware and machine learning engineers to build physical robots.
