Former Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger Backs Z2RAM Startup Nagare Labs

Former Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger is backing memory startup Nagare Labs through Playground Global to develop Z2RAM, an innovative AI memory technology aimed at bypassing EUV lithography. The startup recently secured a $5 million seed round to build memory combining SRAM speed with DRAM density. This development addresses the critical 'memory wall' bottleneck that limits modern AI hardware performance by offering high-density, low-latency memory without relying on costly advanced lithography nodes. It represents an alternative approach to conventional memory solutions like HBM, potentially reshaping the semiconductor landscape. Z2RAM utilizes oxide semiconductor materials, standard backend-of-line (BEOL) processes, and transistor-based storage cells for non-destructive reads. Nagare Labs plans to deliver working memory chip samples within four years and achieve commercial delivery over the next decade.

## BACKGROUND

The 'memory wall' refers to the growing performance gap between processors and memory speeds, which severely limits overall system throughput in compute-heavy AI tasks. EUV (Extreme Ultraviolet) lithography is an expensive, cutting-edge manufacturing process required to print extremely fine features on microchips, and bypassing it could significantly reduce production complexity and cost.
