First Complete All-Sky Ultraviolet Map Created Using Anthropic's Claude Science AI

Astronomers have created the first complete all-sky ultraviolet map, utilizing Anthropic's Claude Science AI to estimate unobserved data for roughly one-third of the sky. The project combines far-ultraviolet and near-ultraviolet observation data across multiple space missions, using cross-spectral machine learning to impute missing regions. This achievement demonstrates how AI workbenches can overcome physical sensor limitations in astronomy by cross-referencing multi-wavelength datasets to synthesize missing observations. It provides scientists with an unprecedented, seamless view of the UV sky while clearly marking model predictions and uncertainty levels. NASA's GALEX mission previously mapped two-thirds of the sky in ultraviolet, leaving one-third unobserved to avoid detector damage from bright stellar regions. Claude Science estimated the remaining regions based on correlations between known UV emission levels and data from visible light, infrared, and radio spectrums.

## BACKGROUND

Ultraviolet astronomy requires space telescopes because Earth's ozone layer absorbs UV radiation before it reaches the ground. Space missions such as NASA's GALEX and South Korea's FIMS/SPEAR provided crucial UV surveys, but camera safety protocols often prevented them from observing dense or bright regions near the galactic plane.
