Fable Director Reveals All NPCs Are Handcrafted Without AI or Procedural Tools
Game director Ralph Fulton announced that the development team behind the upcoming *Fable* reboot is hand-crafting every non-player character (NPC) in the game's world. The team decided to scrap an internal random generation tool in order to ensure that each character's appearance, occupation, and personality are fully consistent. As the video game industry increasingly turns to generative AI and procedural content to scale up open-world production, *Fable* is taking a counter-trend approach focused on handcrafted detail. This choice highlights a key design trade-off in modern game development between automated content scale and human-curated world believability. Early in development, the team created a generator to randomize NPC traits and save time, but discarded it because it frequently produced contradictory character details that ruined immersion. The game is targeting a 2027 release and is slated to launch on PlayStation as well as Xbox platforms.
## BACKGROUND
Procedural generation is a game development technique where algorithms automatically generate content such as game maps, items, or NPC traits based on predefined rules. While procedural tools allow studios to rapidly create vast game worlds with fewer resources, they can sometimes create generic or mismatched content compared to traditional handcrafted game design.
