EU AI Act's AI-Generated Content Labeling Requirements Take Effect
The European Union's AI Act is set to enforce transparency rules, requiring AI-generated images, audio, video, and text to be clearly labeled. This milestone marks the implementation of Article 50, which mandates machine-readable provenance marks and visible labels for AI systems operating in the EU. This regulation forces AI developers and platforms to implement robust content provenance standards, significantly impacting how AI-generated media is distributed and consumed globally. It aims to combat misinformation and deepfakes by ensuring users can easily distinguish between human and synthetic content. While the AI Act does not dictate a single labeling method, the industry standard is shifting toward a two-layer approach combining C2PA metadata manifests with imperceptible digital watermarks. These standards, such as C2PA 2.1, are designed to survive common modifications like cropping, resizing, and platform uploads.
## BACKGROUND
The EU AI Act is a comprehensive regulatory framework designed to govern the development and deployment of artificial intelligence within the European Union. Article 50 of the Act specifically addresses transparency, requiring providers of AI systems that generate or manipulate image, audio, or video content to ensure the outputs are marked in a machine-readable format.
