Elon Musk Endorses Cloudflare's Prediction of AI Traffic Surpassing Human Traffic 1,000-Fold
Elon Musk has endorsed a prediction by Cloudflare's CFO Thomas Seifert that AI agent traffic will exceed human internet traffic by 1,000 times within the next five years. This comes as recent data indicates that machine-generated traffic has already surpassed human traffic earlier than previously expected. This shift highlights a fundamental transformation in how the internet is used, moving from human-centric browsing to automated AI agents executing complex tasks. As AI agents perform tasks by making thousands of rapid HTTP requests, web infrastructure and developers must adapt to handle this massive surge in automated traffic. Cloudflare initially estimated that machine traffic would overtake human traffic by 2027, but data shows this milestone was reached in May 2026. According to HUMAN Security, AI-driven monthly traffic grew by 187% in 2025, with over 95% of it concentrated in retail, streaming, and travel sectors.
## BACKGROUND
AI agents are autonomous software programs designed to perform tasks on behalf of users, such as gathering real-time information, comparing prices, or booking services. Unlike traditional web scrapers, these agents interact with websites dynamically, generating orders of magnitude more web requests than a human user doing the same task.
