Douyin Cracks Down on Vulgar Content, Penalizing AI-Generated Material and Large Accounts

Douyin announced its July content moderation results, removing 403,000 pieces of vulgar content and penalizing 147,000 accounts. The platform highlighted cases involving AI-generated vulgar images under the guise of "AI tutorials" and cross-border traffic redirection schemes. This cleanup highlights the evolving challenges of platform governance, particularly how bad actors exploit generative AI and cross-border networks to bypass traditional moderation. It underscores the necessity for platforms to continuously update their detection mechanisms against sophisticated evasion tactics. Among the penalized accounts, over 1,290 accounts had more than 100,000 followers, showing that large accounts are not exempt from enforcement. Additionally, Douyin collaborated with law enforcement, leading to the criminal detention of individuals involved in cross-border pornography distribution.
