Doubao Mobile Assistant Restricts GUI Automation Pending App Developer Approval

ByteDance's Doubao Mobile Assistant announced a 30-day notice period ending October 15, during which screen automation for third-party apps is restricted until developers opt in under a new automation protocol. Currently, only system apps, ZTE apps, ByteDance apps, and select pre-integrated third-party apps can be operated via GUI. This decision addresses key safety and legal challenges AI agents face when directly executing user tasks across third-party mobile applications. By establishing a clear permission protocol, ByteDance aims to avoid friction with app developers while setting security boundary standards for mobile AI agents. Unpermitted third-party apps cannot be automated across any compatible device during the 30-day notice period. Even after October 15, developers retain the right to explicitly refuse AI screen control, and Doubao Assistant will immediately disable automated operations for those apps.

## BACKGROUND

Mobile GUI agents utilize vision-language AI models to read smartphone screens and simulate touch or swipe gestures to accomplish complex tasks for users. However, operating third-party software without explicit permission raises data privacy, security, and terms-of-service compliance issues.
