Disney Appoints Former Character.AI CEO Karandeep Anand as First Chief Technology Officer
Disney has appointed Karandeep Anand, former CEO of Character.AI, as its Senior Executive Vice President and first-ever Chief Technology Officer, effective October 2. In this new role, Anand will oversee enterprise technology, infrastructure, data, AI platforms, and engineering initiatives across the entertainment giant. This executive move highlights Disney's strategic push to integrate modern technology and AI into its storytelling and operational framework. It also demonstrates how traditional media powerhouses are actively recruiting leadership and technical talent from generative AI startups to accelerate digital transformation. Alongside Anand's appointment, Disney also recruited several technical team members from Character.AI to reinforce its AI capabilities. Interestingly, this hire follows a dispute last year when Disney issued a cease-and-desist letter to Character.AI over copyright concerns regarding its characters.
