Digital Foundry Highlights SDK Compatibility Challenges for Sony's QSSR on Base PS5

Digital Foundry highlighted that Sony's Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) AI upscaling technology for the base PlayStation 5 faces Software Development Kit (SDK) compatibility barriers. Older games may require developers to upgrade their SDK version and undergo quality assurance testing rather than enabling QSSR through a simple system-level toggle. Because updating older games to a newer SDK requires weeks of developer time and quality assurance, studios may decide against patching older or less commercially successful titles. Consequently, base PS5 users may not see widespread adoption of QSSR across legacy game catalogs. Unlike PSSR on the PS5 Pro, which utilizes a centralized system library capable of integrating with older SDK versions, QSSR currently lacks a centralized architecture. Although Sony engineers state QSSR requires minimal code adjustments, the lack of backward SDK compatibility poses practical economic and technical friction.

## BACKGROUND

Sony introduced PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) on the PS5 Pro as an AI-driven image upscaling system that enhances graphics without straining hardware. QSSR (Quick Spectral Super Resolution) is a lighter variant engineered to bring similar AI upscaling benefits to the standard PS5 hardware. A Software Development Kit (SDK) consists of platform-specific building blocks that developers must use when compiling and updating their games.
