Developer Uses Rust and Claude AI to Build Office Suite Alternatives
Developer Brandon Thomas has released WordCraft, GridCraft, and DeckCraft as open-source alternatives to Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Built entirely in Rust with the assistance of Claude AI, these applications support native cross-platform environments and browser execution via WebAssembly. This project highlights the growing trend of AI-assisted software development, demonstrating how a single developer can rapidly build complex, cross-platform productivity software. It also showcases the capability of Rust in creating high-performance applications that challenge established commercial office suites. The applications support major file formats like DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX, alongside various compatibility formats such as ODT, Markdown, and CSV, though some early projects are still missing advanced formatting features and embedded objects. They are currently available as early-stage development releases on GitHub.
## BACKGROUND
WebAssembly (Wasm) is an open standard that defines a portable binary code format, enabling high-performance applications to run smoothly within web browsers and non-web environments. Rust is a systems programming language focused on safety, especially safe concurrency, and high performance without needing a garbage collector.
