Developer Runs Android Apps on Windows 10 Mobile Without Subsystem Using AI
Developer Computershik leveraged Claude to create Megler, an open-source project that enables Windows 10 Mobile 15063 and later to run Android apps natively without requiring an Android subsystem or hardware virtualization. This project achieves what Microsoft ultimately abandoned with Project Astoria, providing a lightweight alternative that breathes new life into a discontinued mobile operating system by granting access to modern Android apps and Google Play services. Megler implements a custom dynamic linker, C runtime, and Java execution environment, executing ARM native code directly while using Windows technologies like ANGLE and Direct3D for graphics rendering and UI processing.
## BACKGROUND
Windows 10 Mobile is a discontinued mobile operating system released by Microsoft in 2015 as the successor to Windows Phone 8.1, which officially ended support in January 2020. Project Astoria was Microsoft's 2015 initiative to let developers port Android apps to Windows 10 Mobile via an internal compatibility layer, but it was cancelled before public release.
