Developer Applies MIT's Weight-Space Programming to Modify Gemma Neurons
A developer successfully used Claude to directly edit 8 MLP neurons in Gemma 4 12B without retraining, modifying how the model handles specific Italian verb tenses. This demonstrates that frontier LLMs can perform precise model editing in weight-space for practical tasks, offering an alternative to traditional prompting and fine-tuning. Claude rewrote 92,000 parameters (roughly a 100 KB diff) to act as a conditional switch, successfully altering target translations while leaving 182 out of 200 unrelated translations unchanged.
## BACKGROUND
Weight-space programming is an emergent technique where advanced AI models can directly interpret, read, and write raw neural network weights to fix bugs or alter behaviors without gradient-based training.
