Deloitte Survey Finds 1 in 6 UK Workers Pay Out-of-Pocket for AI Tools

A Deloitte survey of 25,000 UK workers revealed that one in six employees (17%) pays out of pocket for generative AI tools at work, spending nearly £1 billion annually. Additionally, 31% of respondents use AI tools without their employer's knowledge, showing that employee adoption is outstripping enterprise deployment. This trend highlights the rapid rise of 'shadow AI' in the workforce, where unmonitored consumer AI usage creates significant data privacy and intellectual property risks for organizations. It pressures businesses to move past simple access permissions and establish clear governance frameworks alongside sanctioned enterprise tools. Employees save an average of 70 minutes per week using tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Copilot for information retrieval, email drafting, and content summarization. Two-thirds of surveyed workers have tried generative AI, and nearly a quarter use these tools daily in their work routine.
