DeepSeek Founder Prioritizes AGI and Open Source Over Commercialization
DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng revealed during a four-hour investor meeting that the company is prioritizing Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and open-source models over short-term commercialization, user growth, or building consumer products. He emphasized that the company will not develop 3D generation, video generation, or world models, focusing instead on team stability and AGI. This strategic stance challenges the typical commercial-first approach of many US tech giants, positioning DeepSeek as a highly focused, open-source-driven competitor in the global AI race. By refusing to build "super-apps" or commercialize prematurely, DeepSeek aims to maximize its chances of achieving AGI while sharing its progress openly with the community. Liang noted that the gap between Chinese and American AI is mainly due to resource constraints, and DeepSeek open-sources the exact same models it deploys internally. Additionally, he stated that open-sourcing is a long-term commercial strategy because AI's potential share of global GDP is too large for any single company to monopolize.
## BACKGROUND

The company gained global attention in early 2025 with the release of its DeepSeek-R1 model, which achieved performance comparable to leading US models like OpenAI's o1 at a fraction of the training cost.
