Corning Expands Polarcor Glass Polarizer Capacity for AI Data Centers

Corning announced an expansion of its Polarcor glass polarizer manufacturing capacity and secured a multi-year supply agreement with a leading active photonics company. This move aims to meet escalating demand for optical interconnect components driven by AI workload growth in data centers. As AI clusters scale up, data centers are shifting toward high-speed optical transceivers and photonics to handle massive data throughput efficiently. Ensuring a stable supply of foundational optical components like polarizers is critical to scaling next-generation AI compute infrastructure without hardware bottlenecks. Polarcor glass polarizers are vital for optical isolators, which restrict light transmission to a single direction to prevent back-reflected light from destabilizing or damaging semiconductor lasers in transceivers. The capacity expansion aligns with Corning's strategic target to reach $20 billion in annualized sales by the end of 2026 and $40 billion by 2030.

## BACKGROUND

Optical interconnects replace traditional copper cabling with optical fibers and photonic components to transport data between servers and switches at higher speeds and lower latency. Optical isolators function similarly to electronic diodes, using polarizers and magneto-optic materials to protect sensitive optical sources from optical feedback.
