COMAC Plans AI Training Grounds to Deploy Humanoid Robots in Aircraft Manufacturing

He Dongfeng, Chairman of Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), announced plans to build AI training grounds and construct a cloud-edge-device collaborative testing environment. The effort aims to integrate humanoid robots and embodied AI into the assembly workshops of large commercial aircraft. Deploying humanoid robotics into high-precision aerospace manufacturing marks a key step toward advanced industrial automation and smart factories. The move also aligns with national policy initiatives in China aimed at achieving routine industrial deployment of embodied AI by the end of 2026. The setup uses a cloud-edge-device architecture to balance workloads and real-time processing requirements across central servers, edge computing nodes, and robot hardware. However, as a high-level corporate announcement, it lacks concrete technical specifications, implementation benchmarks, or detailed timelines.

## BACKGROUND

COMAC is China's state-owned aerospace manufacturer responsible for developing and producing large passenger jets such as the C919. Embodied AI refers to artificial intelligence integrated into physical bodies like humanoid robots, enabling them to perceive and act upon physical environments. Cloud-edge-device collaborative computing distributes computing tasks between central cloud servers, local edge infrastructure, and end devices to lower latency and optimize processing.
