cmpunlocker v0.5 Unlocks ECC and 4 Extra SMs on Nvidia CMP 170HX GPUs
Version 0.5 of the open-source hardware utility cmpunlocker has been released, enabling Error-Correcting Code (ECC) memory support and unlocking four additional Streaming Multiprocessors on Nvidia CMP 170HX GPUs. By unlocking hidden hardware capabilities and ECC memory support, this update turns inexpensive repurposed mining cards into high-bandwidth (1.5 TB/s) powerhouses for local LLM inference at a fraction of the price of specialized AI workstations. Unlocking the additional SMs enhances parallel compute performance, while ECC memory support prevents silent data corruption during intensive AI workloads. The developer also hinted that a future update enabling PCIe Gen 3 speeds is currently in development.
## BACKGROUND
The Nvidia CMP 170HX is a dedicated cryptocurrency mining GPU built using cut-down Ampere GA100 dies equipped with high-bandwidth HBM2e memory. Streaming Multiprocessors (SMs) are the core compute engines within Nvidia GPUs responsible for executing parallel processing threads, while ECC memory detects and corrects data corruption to maintain system stability.
