Claude Desktop App Adds Built-In Browser for Autonomous Web Tasks

Anthropic has updated the Claude desktop application to include a built-in browser for Claude Cowork, enabling the AI to independently navigate websites, click buttons, fill forms, and extract data. This feature automatically opens in a sidebar when a task requires web access, eliminating the need for external browser extensions. This update enhances the autonomy of AI agents by allowing them to execute multi-step web workflows in the background while users focus on other tasks. It also improves privacy and security by isolating the AI's web activities from the user's personal browser data, history, and credentials. The built-in browser is fully isolated, though users can selectively import login credentials from browsers like Chrome, Edge, or Firefox. While the feature runs on the desktop app, users can trigger it from web or mobile interfaces as long as the desktop client remains open and connected to the internet.
