Chrome and Edge Require 20GB Free Disk Space for Local AI Models
Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge have updated their system requirements, now requiring at least 20GB of free disk space before downloading and running local AI models on user devices. Additionally, Microsoft Edge requires a GPU with at least 5.5GB of VRAM. This change highlights the significant local resource demands of on-device AI deployment in mainstream web browsers, shifting processing away from the cloud but placing a higher hardware burden on users. While the AI models themselves are much smaller than 20GB, this threshold acts as a buffer to ensure system stability. Edge will automatically delete the model if free space drops below 10GB, while Chrome allows users to disable the feature entirely.
