Chinese Police Crack Down on AI-Generated Rumors Targeting Xiaomi
Xiaomi announced that Chinese police have resolved multiple cases involving the use of generative AI to fabricate and spread rumors about the company. These police operations resulted in the arrest of several suspects, administrative penalties, and the shutdown of thousands of associated accounts and multiple Multi-Channel Network (MCN) agencies. This crackdown highlights the growing legal and regulatory challenges surrounding generative AI, particularly its misuse by online "water armies" and MCNs to manipulate public opinion. It signals a tightening of enforcement against AI-driven corporate defamation and misinformation campaigns in China. In one notable case in Jinzhong, suspects used AI content spinning to rewrite and fabricate rumors, controlling over 9,000 linked accounts and 50 MCNs to generate over 500,000 RMB in illegal profits. Other cases involved criminal detention for illegal business operations targeting Xiaomi and other automotive companies.
