Chinese Police Bust Extortion Gang Using AI Deepfakes to Hijack Logistics Accounts
Police in Yichang, Hubei, arrested a 16-member criminal gang that used AI face-synthesis technology to hijack driver accounts on freight platforms and extort shippers. The syndicate illicitly intercepted delivery orders and coerced cargo owners into paying arbitrary fee increases under threats of delayed or withheld shipments. This case illustrates how readily available AI tools enable cybercriminals to breach biometric remote identity verification in real-world supply chain platforms. It highlights the growing vulnerabilities of gig-economy logistics networks when identity management relies solely on automated facial authentication. The criminals acquired pre-verified freight accounts from gray-market vendors and bypassed liveness checks using AI face-swapping software. They profited by arbitraging price differences between platforms, re-assigning orders to smaller trucks, and extorting shippers with bogus highway and urgency surcharges.

Online freight platforms rely on biometric identity verification, such as real-name registration and liveness detection algorithms, to confirm the identity of driver account holders.
