China Unveils AI Systems for Geological Mapping and Mineral Prospecting
China's Ministry of Natural Resources released two AI-powered tools, "Smart Mapping" and "Smart Prospecting," designed to automate geological surveying and mineral exploration. The release comes as China announced it holds the world's largest reserves in 14 key minerals, including rare earths, tungsten, and tin. These systems shift mineral exploration from experience-driven methods to data-driven AI models, significantly reducing processing times and enhancing mapping precision for critical resources. Furthermore, China is preparing to export this technology globally through planned collaborations with countries like Saudi Arabia and Uzbekistan. The "Smart Mapping" system achieves over 90% accuracy in identifying geological bodies and boosts workflow efficiency by more than 50%. The "Smart Prospecting" system incorporates a knowledge graph with over 1 million entries and 200+ analytical algorithms across gravity, magnetic, electrical, geochemical, and remote sensing datasets—reducing target area identification time in the West Qinling gold field from over a month to just 5 days.

Geological mapping is the foundational step in mineral exploration, involving the detailed recording of subsurface rock distributions, stratigraphy, and geological structures. Prospecting target areas are favorable geographic zones identified by integrating geological features with physical and chemical data to predict economic mineral deposits. Traditionally, synthesizing these multi-disciplinary geological datasets relied heavily on time-consuming manual field surveys and expert intuition.
