China UnionPay Partners with 15 Banks to Launch AI Agent Bank Cards
China UnionPay has partnered with 15 commercial banks to launch "Agent Bank Cards," integrating large language model capabilities and AI tools directly into banking products. The solution features one-click smart payments for services like Didi and Umetrip, with several banks already issuing these cards. This initiative marks a significant shift in fintech, transforming traditional payment cards into distribution channels for AI capabilities and Model-as-a-Service (MaaS). It also paves the way for seamless, voice- and gesture-controlled payments across diverse devices like smart cars and AR/MR glasses. UnionPay is delivering its financial-domain AI capabilities through standardized APIs, allowing partner banks to easily deploy customizable agent cards. Initial rollouts include Ping An Bank's "AI Computing Card" with Tencent Cloud and SPD Bank's tech-focused credit card with Alibaba Cloud.
## BACKGROUND
Model-as-a-Service (MaaS) is a cloud-based delivery model that hosts pre-trained machine learning models on cloud infrastructure, making them accessible to users and developers via APIs. This approach allows organizations to leverage advanced AI capabilities without the need for local installations or managing complex infrastructure. By adopting MaaS, financial institutions can rapidly integrate large language models and specialized AI agents into their existing services.
