China's Short Drama Users Reach 851M, Led by ByteDance's Hongguo App
A QuestMobile report reveals that China's short drama industry reached a deduplicated user base of 851 million, with ByteDance's Hongguo Free Short Drama leading the market at 356 million monthly active users (MAUs). Additionally, AI-powered "motion comic dramas" are emerging as a rapidly growing, low-cost content format that has successfully established an independent market segment. The massive user base and high engagement rates, which now surpass traditional online video in monthly usage time, highlight a major shift in digital entertainment consumption. The rise of AI-generated motion comics demonstrates how generative AI is actively lowering production barriers and creating entirely new content categories in the media ecosystem. Dedicated short drama apps saw a 77.1% year-on-year growth to 402 million users, with average monthly usage reaching 26.9 hours per user. AI-generated short dramas show a strong genre concentration, with fantasy and sci-fi themes accounting for 81.7% of user interest compared to only 34.8% in traditional short dramas.
## BACKGROUND
Short dramas (micro-dramas) are ultra-short video series, typically lasting 1-2 minutes per episode, designed for quick mobile consumption and often monetized through ads or paywalls. ByteDance's Hongguo App leverages a free, ad-supported model integrated with its Tomato Novel platform to convert popular web novels into short video formats. AI motion comics use generative AI to animate static comic panels, significantly reducing the time and cost compared to traditional animation production.
