China's Major Telecom Operators Launch Industry Group Standards for AI-eSIM
China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom have officially launched the drafting of industry group standards for AI-eSIM alongside tech giants including Tencent, Alibaba, Volcano Engine, and JD. Led by China Mobile IoT Company, the initiative aims to standardize core technical links across the entire AI-eSIM ecosystem. Currently, the lack of unified interaction standards across hardware vendors results in high integration costs and hampers the commercial scaling of AI-eSIM IoT devices. Establishing common standards will accelerate device interoperability, streamline network provisioning, and enable seamless integration between hardware terminals and AI agent platforms. The upcoming standards will explicitly define interface protocols, interaction workflows, and operation rules for key components, including smart IoT terminals, over-the-air card writing, authentication, AI agent platforms, and management systems. Alongside the announcement, China Mobile unveiled the Xiongan AI Smart Hardware Key Lab to support full-chain product development and cross-industry deployment.
## BACKGROUND
An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a programmable SIM chip integrated directly into a device, allowing users to provision cellular network profiles over the air without changing physical cards. Combining eSIM technology with artificial intelligence enables real-time network optimization, dynamic switching, and intelligent data management for IoT networks. As AI agents and smart devices expand, managing both cellular connectivity and AI compute models (such as byte-and-token operating models) requires standardized connectivity and operational frameworks.
