China Releases First Fengyun Meteorological Satellite Extreme Weather AI Models

China has released its first batch of Fengyun meteorological satellite extreme weather AI models at the 2026 Fengyun Satellite User Conference. These models include a typhoon smart cloud image interpretation model that generates analysis reports in 27 seconds and a severe convection short-range warning model that extends early warnings to four hours. This development transitions Fengyun satellite applications from passive observation to predictive forecasting, significantly improving disaster prevention and response capabilities. By automating rapid typhoon assessments and providing longer lead times for severe weather, it marks a major practical application of AI in meteorological science. The typhoon interpretation model integrates multi-channel cloud images to cover 7 typhoon characteristics and 20+ live satellite products, performing interpretations every 15 minutes. Meanwhile, the severe convection model predicts future developments by breaking cloud evolution down into overall system movement and local system growth/decay.

## BACKGROUND

Fengyun meteorological satellites are a series of remote-sensing satellites developed by China for weather forecasting, disaster monitoring, and environmental protection. They include both polar-orbiting satellites and geostationary satellites like Fengyun-4, which provide continuous observation of cloud cover, lightning, and atmospheric conditions.
