China Releases 430,000 Micro-Dramas in 8 Months as AI Usage Soars
In the first eight months of the year, China released 430,000 micro-dramas—13 times the total for all of last year—with over 90% utilizing AI technologies in their production. Concurrently, new regulations took effect on September 1, introducing tiered content approval rules and mandatory labeling for AI-generated content. This explosive growth highlights how generative AI (AIGC) is drastically lowering media production costs and scaling digital content creation at an unprecedented commercial rate. At the same time, China's new regulatory stance establishes strict compliance frameworks around AI transparency, portrait rights, and voice licensing. China's micro-drama audience has surpassed 800 million, with the market projected to exceed 100 billion yuan by 2025. Regulatory enforcement has already removed 68,000 non-compliant short dramas this year, while new rules from the National Radio and Television Administration enforce a tiered classification system and standardized identification logos on episodes.
## BACKGROUND
Micro-dramas are ultra-short digital series—typically 1 to 2 minutes per episode—designed for mobile vertical viewing and fast-paced storytelling. Generative AI (AIGC) tools assist creators across the production pipeline, from automated scriptwriting and character voice synthesis to AI-generated visuals, enabling low-cost and rapid content output.
